TWP Stain
TWP Stain - 100 Series, 1500 Series and 200 Series
TWP (Total Wood Preservative) is an oil-based, penetrating wood stain that soaks into the wood instead of forming a film, so it won't crack, peel or blister. It repels water, resists mold and mildew, and protects against UV graying. We stock all three series, TWP 100, TWP 1500 and TWP 200, in every color we carry, from gallons to 5 gallon pails. Orders placed before 4pm ET ship the same day, with free shipping.

How to Apply TWP Stain
- Let new wood weather. TWP recommends about 6 months for new cedar or redwood and 12 months for new pressure-treated lumber.
- Remove other finishes. TWP can go over old TWP, but any other brand of stain or paint has to be stripped first.
- Clean and brighten with the Restore-A-Deck kit, then let the wood dry for at least 2 days.
- Apply TWP 100 or 1500 wet-on-wet. Put on the first coat, and if it soaks in within 15-30 minutes, add a second coat. Dense hardwoods usually take only one.
- Keep it dry for 2-3 days after application.
Popular Colors - TWP 101 Cedartone and More
Cedartone, Redwood, Dark Oak, Pecan, Honeytone and Rustic are among the most popular TWP colors. Each series has its own color list. TWP 100 uses 100-numbers (101 Cedartone), TWP 1500 uses 1500-numbers (1501 Cedartone) and TWP 200 uses 200-numbers (201 Cedartone). See every color by series in our TWP stain colors guide.

TWP Stain FAQ
How long does TWP stain take to dry?
In good conditions, about 24 hours for TWP 100 and 48 hours for TWP 1500. TWP 200 is dry to the touch overnight. Cool or humid weather slows drying.
Can TWP stain be applied over an existing stain?
Only over TWP. Any other brand of stain or paint has to be stripped first. TWP 100 and TWP 1500 can be used over each other.
How often do I need to reapply TWP?
When the color starts to fade, usually around 12-24 months depending on the color. Decks and other horizontal surfaces need it sooner than fences and siding.
How long should I wait to stain new wood?
About 6 months for new cedar or redwood and 12 months for new pressure-treated lumber.
What's the difference between TWP 100 and TWP 1500?
They're used the same way. TWP 1500 is the lower-VOC version, 350 g/L instead of 550 g/L, so it can be sold in all 50 states. Read our TWP 100 vs 1500 guide.
