TWP vs. Sikkens ProLuxe vs. Penofin: Which Deck Stain Is Right for You?
TWP, Sikkens ProLuxe and Penofin are three of the most trusted names in exterior wood stain, and they are also three of the most searched. All three make excellent products, but they have different strengths. Here is how they compare so you can pick the right one for your deck, fence, siding or log home.
TWP Stain
TWP (Total Wood Preservative) is an oil-based penetrating stain built around wood preservatives that help protect against mildew, rot and UV graying. It soaks into the wood rather than forming a film, so recoating is easy and it will not peel.
- Best for: pressure-treated pine, cedar and redwood decks and fences
- Popular choices: TWP 100 Series, TWP 200 Series for cedar and siding, and the lower-VOC TWP 1500 Series
- Look: natural, semi-transparent tones that show the grain
Sikkens ProLuxe
Sikkens ProLuxe (now sold under the PPG ProLuxe name) is known for rich, even color and a slightly more finished look. Its Cetol line covers decks, siding, log homes, doors and windows.
- Best for: homeowners who want a deeper, more uniform color, plus log homes and siding
- Popular choices: Cetol SRD / SRD RE for decks and siding, Cetol Log & Siding, and the Cetol 1 and 23 system for a more durable two-part finish
- VOC note: SRD RE is the version for VOC-regulated states such as Michigan
Penofin
Penofin oil finishes are made with Brazilian rosewood oil and are prized for how they bring out the natural beauty of the wood. Penofin offers formulas for both softwoods and dense hardwoods.
- Best for: cedar, redwood and exotic hardwoods where you want a natural, oiled look
- Popular choices: Penofin Red Label, Penofin Blue Label, Penofin Hardwood and the plant-based Penofin Verde

Don't Mix Brands Over Each Other
Whichever stain you choose, stay with it for maintenance coats. Switching to a different brand or base usually means stripping the old finish first. If you are switching, start with a stripper and brightener.
