FAQ
Does Sikkens stain fade over time?
All exterior stains weather over time. PPG ProLuxe finishes use UV absorbers to slow fading and protect the wood, and regular maintenance coats keep the color looking fresh. Each product page lists its recoat guidance.
What does "RE" mean on Sikkens ProLuxe?
RE stands for reduced emissions. RE versions such as Cetol SRD RE (under 275 g/L VOC) are the lower-VOC formulas, while the original Cetol SRD is a 550 VOC formula. The RE products are the ones for VOC-regulated areas.
Can I apply Sikkens stain myself?
Applying Sikkens stain is user-friendly, and many consumers find it convenient to apply themselves.
However, it's crucial to follow the instructions carefully to achieve optimal results.
For those uncertain about the process, hiring a professional can ensure a flawless application.
How many coats of Sikkens stain do I need?
It depends on the product. Cetol SRD RE is a one-coat finish. Log & Siding is a two-coat system. Cetol 1 RE + 23 Plus RE is a three-coat system: one coat of Cetol 1 RE and two coats of 23 Plus RE. Maintenance RE goes on as a single clear coat over a weathered 23 Plus or Log & Siding finish.
What surface preparation is necessary before using Sikkens stain?
Surface preparation entails cleaning the wood to remove dirt, mildew, and old finishes.
A smooth, clean surface allows for better adhesion and even absorption of the stain.
Proper preparation is key to maximizing the stain's performance and longevity. See our wood cleaners and brighteners.
Can Sikkens stain be used on decks?
Yes, but choose the right product. For decks, use Cetol SRD RE or Cetol DEK. Log & Siding and the Cetol 1 + 23 system are made for vertical surfaces like log walls, siding and trim, not decks.
Is Sikkens now PPG ProLuxe?
Yes. Sikkens ProLuxe is now sold under the PPG ProLuxe name. Cetol SRD, Log & Siding, Cetol 1, Cetol 23 and the rest of the line carry the PPG ProLuxe name on the can.
