Warranty terms from EXPERT Professional Wood Care; they require proper application and yearly maintenance. Expert is a penetrating oil that dries slowly over several days, and its final color can take a few weeks to fully develop. Rough or weathered wood soaks up more stain, so plan on the lower coverage number.
Watch: Which Wood Stain Transparency Is Right for You?
Expert Stain & Seal Colors
- Transparent: Cedar, Honey, Natural, Redwood and Clear.
- Semi-Transparent: Chestnut, Mahogany, Pecan, Sequoia and Walnut.
- Semi-Solid: Auburn, Barnwood, Black, Cape Cod Gray, Chocolate, Eucalyptus, Palomino, Sable and Slate Gray.
Pecan is a popular Expert color and comes in the Semi-Transparent line. Wood species, age and prep all change the final color, so test a small hidden area first.
How to Apply Expert Stain & Seal
- Clean and brighten. Start with clean, dry wood. The Expert Cleaner & Brightener kit removes dirt and graying and opens up the wood.
- Let it dry. Give the wood time to dry fully before staining.
- Apply. Brush, roll or spray the stain into the wood, working a few boards at a time.
- Stay off it. Don't walk on it for 24 hours, and allow 72 hours before light traffic.
Expert Stain & Seal FAQ
Is Expert Stain & Seal oil-based or water-based?
Oil-based. It's an ultra-low VOC oil formula made with non-drying oils that penetrate deep into the wood instead of forming a film on top.
Which Expert finish should I choose?
Choose Transparent to show the most grain, Semi-Transparent for richer color with grain still visible, or Semi-Solid for the most color and to hide minor imperfections in older wood.
How much Expert Stain & Seal do I need?
Divide your square footage by the coverage above, using the lower number for rough or weathered wood. Our stain calculator guide walks through measuring decks, railings, stairs and fences.
Why does the color look different after a few weeks?
Expert's penetrating oils dry slowly over several days, and the true color can take a few weeks to fully develop.
