Penofin vs Ready Seal: Which Stain Is Right for Your Deck or Fence?

Penofin and Ready Seal are two of the most popular penetrating oil stains for decks and fences, and both are easy for a homeowner to apply. They work differently, though, and the right pick depends on your wood, your project and how you plan to put it on. Here's how they compare, using the manufacturers' application information.

When to Choose Penofin

Penofin's Stain & Sealer is a penetrating oil that won't crack, chip or flake, and it doesn't leave lap marks or streaks or need back-brushing. It's a great choice when you want control over color depth: one thick coat or two thin coats lets you build richer color. For premium decks, Penofin Red Label uses Brazilian rosewood oil, and Penofin Hardwood is made for dense woods like ipe.

When to Choose Ready Seal

Ready Seal is just as easy to get a good-looking result with. It needs no back-brushing, blends itself so it won't leave runs or lap marks, and has no specific temperature range. That makes it a favorite for long fence lines and for anyone spraying on their own. Fences and other verticals usually need just one coat.

What About TWP?

TWP is the other popular penetrating oil we sell, usually applied as two light coats wet on wet. TWP 100 can't ship to VOC-regulated states, but TWP 1500 can. For a full comparison of TWP with Sikkens and Penofin, see TWP vs Sikkens ProLuxe vs Penofin.

Which Should You Buy?

  • Long fence, spraying it yourself: Ready Seal.
  • Deck where you want deeper, richer color: Penofin.
  • Ipe or other dense hardwood: Penofin Hardwood, or see our Ipe Oil guide.
  • Comparing every fence option: see our fence stain and sealer guide.

Whichever you choose, clean and brighten the wood first with one of our deck cleaners, and let it dry about 48 hours. Questions? Email Sales@TheStainDepot.com.
