Penofin Red Label vs Blue Label
Both are penetrating oil stains made with Brazilian rosewood oil. Red Label Ultra Premium has more transoxide pigment for 99% UV protection against fading, plus extra mildew protection. Blue Label Premium, which Penofin calls the "work horse" of its line, gives 90% UV protection. Pick Red Label for decks in full sun or damp, shady spots where mildew is a problem, and Blue Label for everyday decks, siding and fences.

From Penofin's product support information. Rough or weathered wood soaks up more stain, so plan on the lower coverage number.
How to Apply Penofin
- Softwoods (cedar, pine, redwood): apply with a brush, stain pad or pump sprayer. Wait about 30 minutes for the oil to soak in, then wipe the whole surface with a nap-free cloth. For two-coat formulas, wait 3-4 hours and apply a light second coat.
- Hardwoods (ipe and other dense woods): back brush the oil into the wood, then wipe the entire surface after 20-30 minutes. Hardwoods need only one coat.
- Stain & Sealer: no wiping or back brushing needed.
- Never apply wet-on-wet, and don't apply in temperatures below 45°F or above 80°F.

Is Penofin oil-based?
Yes. Penofin is a penetrating oil finish made with Brazilian rosewood oil. It soaks into the wood and lets it breathe instead of forming a surface film. The exception is Verde, a plant-based 0-VOC formula that cleans up with soap and water.
Do I have to wipe off Penofin?
For Red Label, Blue Label and Hardwood, yes. Wipe the surface with a nap-free cloth after the oil has soaked in so it doesn't stay sticky. Penofin Stain & Sealer is the exception: it doesn't need wiping or back brushing.
How often do I need to reapply Penofin?
Plan on about 9-24 months for decks and 2-5 years for siding and fences, depending on how much sun and weather they get.

Penofin Pressure Treated is made specifically for pressure-treated decks and fences.
