How to Apply Cabot Australian Timber Oil (and How Long It Takes to Dry)
Cabot Australian Timber Oil is one of the most forgiving oil finishes you can put on a deck, but a few details make the difference between a rich, even finish and a sticky one. Here's how to apply it, how long it takes to dry, and what "timber oil" actually is, based on Cabot's own instructions.
What Is Timber Oil?
A timber oil is a penetrating oil finish that soaks into the wood instead of forming a film on top. Cabot Australian Timber Oil blends linseed oil for penetration, long-oil alkyds for durability and tung oil for color depth and water repellency, with translucent iron oxide pigments for UV protection. It was originally formulated to protect dense woods like tallowwood, teak and ipe, and it works on decks, siding, railings and outdoor furniture, including pine and pressure-treated wood.

How to Apply Cabot Australian Timber Oil
- Prep the wood. The surface must be clean, sound and completely dry, free of dirt, mildew, loose fibers and old coatings. Clean with a deck cleaner and use a brightener on cedar and redwood. Shop our deck cleaners. Don't apply over wet lumber; Cabot says to let wood dry in the open air for 3-5 days.
- Check the weather. Air and surface temperatures should be between 50°F and 90°F.
- Work 2-3 boards at a time. Start at one edge and follow through to the end of the boards to avoid lap marks.
- Use a pad or brush. A good pad applicator or stain brush gives the best results. If you spray, back-brush each section right away so the oil penetrates.
- Remove what doesn't soak in. Any oil that doesn't penetrate should be wiped off or rubbed into the boards along the grain. This is the step that prevents a tacky finish.
- One coat only. Cabot calls for a single coat.
How Long Does It Take to Dry?
Plan on 24-48 hours. Cool temperatures, high humidity and heavy application all slow drying, so wipe off excess and give it the full time before putting furniture back.
Outdoor Furniture
For furniture, the best results come from hand rubbing the oil into the wood grain with a soft cloth or lambswool applicator.
