What is UV Plus for Hardwood Decks?

UV Plus for Hardwood Decks is a penetrating wood deck stain and oil finish that beautifies and protects exterior wood, providing a natural appearance. It is ideal for use on ipe, brazilian redwood, mahogany, meranti, massaranduba, teak and other exotic dense hardwoods. UV Plus for Hardwood Decks contains fungicides and UV absorbers of the highest quality. It does not form a surface film when properly applied and is not subject to peeling and flaking. To recoat, just clean the wood surface and reapply UV Plus for Hardwood Decks. No stripping or sanding is necessary. The product may be used on nearly any exterior hardwood surface including decks, vertical surfaces, and trim.  For use on wood substrates only.

How long does UV Plus for Hardwoods last?

On hardwood decks, UV Plus can be expected to last for 1-2 years. The time element will vary depending on conditions such as sunlight, weather and direction of exposure.

I want to keep my wood looking natural? Should I use a clear finish?

Clears with no pigmentation do not offer UV protection or color retention. Our products contain Transparent Iron Oxide pigments which absorb UV radiation while allowing visible light to pass through. This results in a finish that highlights the natural beauty of the wood while still protecting it.

If are areas that are shiny and tacky after 30 minutes. What happened? How do I fix it?

This is usually caused by oversaturation of UV Plus for Hardwood Decks on the wood. Remember, the product must be able to penetrate completely to work properly. Remove any excess material promptly, 30-45 minutes after application.

If there are shiny, tacky areas due to overapplication and failure to remove excess product, scrub affected areas with lacquer thinner or MEK solvent to soften excess material. Wipe dry. If product has cured to the point that this does not correct the problem, excess material must be removed by chemical stripping or sanding. Dispose of clean up materials according to local, state and federal regulations.

Another cause of shiny tacky areas is applying the product to wood that is too damp. An oil based product applied to a wet deck will not penetrate very well, as the oil and water don’t mix. Make sure that the deck is thoroughly dry before applying any oil based product. Lumber that may appear to be dry or dry at the surface can still have a high moisture content that may “push” the oil back out if the boards are heated up by the sun later in the day.

Can UV Plus for Hardwood Decks be applied over another stain?

Yes, provided the previous finish has sufficiently weathered to allow penetration of UV Plus for Hardwood Decks. Before application, clean the surface with Wood & Deck Cleaner or sand to a new surface.

What is the proper temperature to apply UV Plus for Hardwood Decks?

We recommend surface and air temperatures between 45F and 90F. Avoid application in direct sunlight on hot days. If the wood is hot to the touch, it is too hot to apply UV Plus for Hardwood Decks.

Why doesn’t UV Plus for Hardwood Decks bead water?

Water beading is accomplished by adding waxes or paraffin to the stain. These additives do not last very long and are not good permanent water repellents, in addition to this they interfere with adhesion should you decide to paint over the stain. That’s why we don’t use them in our products. UV Plus for Hardwood Decks fills the pores of the wood, providing excellent water repellency that will last.

The weather report predicts rain tomorrow. Can I finish my deck today?

We wouldn’t recommend it. UV Plus for Hardwood Decks needs at least 24-48 hours to dry in good conditions. If a newly stained deck is rained on, the rain can force the stain up out of the pores of the wood, leaving a blotchy appearance. It’s best to wait until there is no precipitation expected for 48 hours. In some regions, this may mean waiting for a different time of year to finish the deck.

Is UV Plus for Hardwood Decks suitable for vertical surfaces?

Yes, UV Plus for Hardwood Decks is an excellent choice for almost any exterior hardwood surface, including vertical surfaces. Make sure the surface is clean, dry, and any previous coatings have either weathered away or been removed. Do not use UV Plus for Hardwood Decks over paints or other film forming coatings, it’s designed to penetrate into bare or weathered wood surfaces.

I want a shiny finish. Can I put multiple coats of UV Plus for Hardwood Decks on the wood?

No. The only way to get a shiny surface on the wood is by using a multiple coat, film forming finish. We don’t recommend clear film forming finishes on decks because they are slippery when wet, they will eventually peel, and they are difficult to maintain and recoat. When properly applied, a penetrating finish like UV Plus for Hardwood Decks will not be shiny, it will have a natural, matte look.

I have trim and other wooden surfaces that are made of cedar and pressure treated wood. Can I use the UV Plus for Hardwood Decks product on these?

Yes, UV Plus for Hardwood Decks can be used on other types of exterior wood, including cedar, redwood, pine, and pressure treated lumber. Keep in mind that the appearance of dissimilar woods will not be the same after applying the UV Plus, but generally it is very complementary.

Messmer’s UV Plus for Hardwood Decks, one gallon for every 200-250 square feet of wood

Application:

Best to apply by natural bristle brush or roller and roller pans, 3/8″ nap roller cover.

Do not begin until you have read and understand all instructions. Do not apply if rain is expected within 48 hours. In certain climates you may have to wait for a different time of year to do this. We recommend doing a small test area on your project to insure your satisfaction with color choice and appearance before proceeding with the entire job.

Clean the deck:
Sweep excess debris (dirt and leaves) off the deck. Clean the deck with Messmer’s Wood & Deck Cleaner (Part A), or another high quality wood cleaner of your choice, then rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Make sure the deck surface is clean, dry and in good condition. You may need to wait a few days for the wood to completely dry depending on weather conditions. Cover plants, grass, concrete, trim, and any other areas you don’t want stained.

Apply the Messmer’s UV plus Hardwood deck stain:
Stir product thoroughly. Make sure that all pigment is mixed evenly into the stain. Apply one coat of UV Plus for Hardwood Decks following label directions. Work with the grain. After 30 minutes, brush or roll out any excess product puddled or pooled on the surface of the deck. If excess product is not removed, sticky, shiny spots may remain on the surface.

Clean-up:
Following label directions, dispose of waste including roller covers and brushes in a water filled container. Seal the container and dispose of it properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long will the product last?
A: Typically UV Plus for Hardwood Decks needs to be reapplied every one to two years. The length of time will vary depending on the wood used, the way the deck is constructed, which direction it faces, and your local climate and sun intensity.

Q: How can I avoid shiny, sticky areas after application?
A: Be sure to wipe up any excess product about 30 minutes after application. UV Plus for Hardwood Decks is a high solids product, and if overapplied it will not just evaporate away. It is designed to be a penetrating finish and does not dry properly if overapplied to the surface.

Q: Why is it important to clean before applying Messmer’s UV Plus for Hardwood Decks to a wood deck?
A: If you apply UV Plus for Hardwood Decks to a dirty surface, the wood will turn dark and dingy. The oils and resins in the UV Plus for Hardwood Decks will entrap the dirt and make it impossible to clean. By cleaning the wood with a good quality wood cleaner like Messmer’s Wood and Deck Part A you are properly preparing the deck for staining.

Maintenance:
All exterior surfaces collect dirt, dust and contaminants. It is necessary to clean them periodically to keep them looking good. We suggest using Messmer’s Wood and Deck Part A Wood Cleaner at least twice a year for periodic maintenance cleaning.  Clean and Maintain a Wood Deck
